How long is your theory pass valid?

A pass on the car theory exam is valid for 1.5 years. The term starts on the day you pass. The CBR gives its own example: if you passed on 9 April 2026, your result is valid up to and including 8 October 2027. The same term applies to motorcycle and moped theory.

What happens when your theory expires?

If you don’t pass the practical exam within 1.5 years, you have to take the theory exam again. Since 1 May 2024 your driving school can only book or move your practical exam if you hold a valid theory certificate. Your theory also has to be valid on the day of the practical exam.

Think you won’t make it? From 3 months before your theory expires, you can take the theory exam again. If it expires on 1 December 2026, you can resit from 1 September 2026. You can make the booking even earlier. You then redo the full 50-question exam, for €50.50 in 2026.

What about 2toDrive and starting young?

The CBR lists no different term for 2toDrive. Your theory is valid for 1.5 years there too. But watch the ages, because your theory clock can start before you’re allowed to take the practical exam.

  • From 16 you can take the car theory exam.
  • From 16.5 you can take driving lessons.
  • From 17 you can take the practical exam. Until 18 you then only drive with a coach.
  • Pass theory on your 16th birthday and it expires when you are 17.5. That leaves only six months for the practical exam.

Starting young? Don’t take theory too early. Ask your driving school roughly when you could take the practical exam, and count back from there.

Which other deadlines are running?

Your theory isn’t the only date to keep an eye on. These terms run side by side.
